Yorkipoo Breed Expert Description

We include the Yorkipoo in our Breed Club, as we see the function of this cross as improving on both Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle disposition and increasing genetic diversity. The Yorkipoo is a designer breed that is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Poodle. This hybrid breed was created to combine the best traits of both parent breeds, resulting in a dog with genetic diversity, a slightly curly coat, different color patterns, and a (generally) calmer temperament, added trainability and recall compared to a full-bred Yorkshire Terrier. The Yorkipoo also improves upon the less-than-great aspect of purebred toy poodle traits of potential shyness and nervousness. The yorkshire terrier parent brings boldness to it’s generally shyer poodle parent. The Yorkipoo has become increasingly popular in recent years for its hypoallergenic qualities and adorable appearance. Get a true feel for the Yorkipoo in under 15 minutes by listening to our Breed Club Podcast.— it’s the easiest way to understand this amazing little breed.

Common Questions About Yorkipoos

Are Yorkipoos good with kids?
Absolutely — with early socialization, Yorkipoos can be incredible family dogs.

Their friendly temperament and intelligence make them naturally well-suited to families, especially when they’re raised with intention and care during early puppyhood. At the Yorkie Co-op, we’ve seen time and time again that Yorkipoos thrive in homes with children when proper puppy-raising practices are followed. That’s why our Free Puppy Raising Guide places such a strong emphasis on early socialization with children of different ages, environments, and sounds.

Here’s the key:
Because Yorkipoos are small (often under 15 pounds), socialization isn’t just about exposure — it’s about safe, positive, scaled-down experiences that match their size and energy. Kids should be taught how to gently handle and interact with a little dog, and puppies should be gradually introduced to age-appropriate play, touch, and noise levels.

How to Raise a Super Portable, Confident Yorkipoo:
✅ Carry them into kid-safe public spaces (with clean floors) and let them observe from your lap
✅ Introduce them to strollers, playground sounds, bikes, and even baby cries in short bursts
✅ Practice soft handling, dress-up, being held by multiple people, and calm crate time
✅ Avoid “overwhelming hugs” and rough handling from toddlers — supervision is key!
✅ Build in tiny adventures with new people, textures, and gentle child-led play

With this kind of thoughtful early exposure, your Yorkipoo won’t just tolerate kids — they’ll be the confident, go-everywhere best friend you’ve always dreamed of.
Yes — Yorkipoos are considered hypoallergenic! As poodles are a hypoallergenic breed and yorkies are a hypoallergenic breed. There’s isn’t any guessing about the coat type as there is with other crosses such as doodles or cavapoos! Yorkipoo’s small size and glossy hair-like coat mean they typically produce waaaay less dander than a larger bodied breed, making them a great option for families seeking a hypoallergenic companion. If your allergies are severe or you’re unsure about an reaction- just come meet the pups in person and spend some time with them and us! Yorkipoos typically weigh between 4 to 12 pounds full grown, depending on the size of the Poodle parent (usually a Toy or Miniature) and genetics from the Yorkshire Terrier side. Most stand around 8 to 12 inches tall at the shoulder.

If size is really important to you, we highly recommend that you fill out our fill out our Upcoming Litter List Form and schedule a Welcome Call. That way, we can match you seriously to a litter and do our best to meet your size preferences!

That said, Yorkipoos are living animals, and a 1–2 pound difference from estimates is always possible. As Yorkie and Yorkipoo professionals, we use our experience and records to give you the most accurate size estimate possible based on lineage, past litters, and growth patterns.
Yes! Yorkipoos often benefit from the increased genetic diversity of being a hybrid between Yorkshire Terriers and Poodles, which can reduce the risk of some inherited health issues common in purebreds. However, like all dogs, they can still be prone to certain conditions such as patellar luxation and dental issues with poor diet and poor exercise.

A healthy dog can be negatively affected by kibble/canned diets that are made of mystery meat and pesticide infused grains. A health dog will also be comprised with over-vaccination, and costly, unnecessary vet clinic upsells. Check out our health guides on choosing a sensible, cost-conscious vet and learn how diet, dental care, and exercise play the biggest role in long term health and happiness! (For dogs and humans!)
We firmly believe NO — it’s all about training! Small dogs often get a “yappy” reputation because they’re treated differently than larger dogs, with less training and sometimes less socialization.

We believe small dogs are the best dogs for modern life, and they should be raised just like any dog — with structure, patience, socialization, and clear boundaries.

We help outline the best raising techniques in our Puppy Raising Guide to ensure your Yorkipoo grows up confident, well-mannered, and calm.
